In memory of Una: Open Letter of Thanks - by Kirsty McQuoid

To Una Open Letter Of Thanks By Kirsty McQuoid My first meeting with Una was in January 2014 and it took place in not one but two coffee houses, both nestled in the heart of Belfast with its majestic City Hall in view. As I consumed coffee after coffee, Una sipped on hot water and firmly declined to join me as I indulged on sticky tray bakes on what was a morning laden with torrential rain and wind that was blustery. Yet, adverse weather conditions didn't matter, I was in awe of this woman before me. What spawned from that meeting was a close friendship and an intense professional partnership. Sadly, lasting just short of a year, as Una passed on the morning of Thursday 4th December of ovarian cancer. PR's ME played a small part (indeed, a small role) in what was to be Una's 5 year crusade to raise the profile of ovarian cancer amongst primary healthcare and the public. PR's ME continue its role, advocating Una's message, a voice for Una so to speak - Collaborating with Northern Ireland's Public Health Agency, ahead of its multi-media ovarian cancer awareness programme scheduled to launch in 2016. As I sat by Una's bedside a few weeks ago, in what was to be our last meeting, Una said to me 'try to get Belfast City Hall lit up teal on 25th March for my birthday'. March 2015 is ovarian cancer awareness month I said to Una, so that should be easy. When I think of Una, and I do a lot, I remember her strength, her spirit, her smile. This makes me smile inside, then feelings of sadness arise, because a special friend has gone. We have lost someone who was self-less, someone who made you reach out for more. Even when challenged with a terminal diagnosis, Una was animated, passionate, witty, full of glee. Always adorned with teal coloured jewellery, soft metal accessories on a lady made of steel. Many of you supported Una and many of you supported Una and her campaigning for many years. Many of you supported Una this year, and many of you helped me and PR's ME support Una this year. Thank you
