Our Mum....the other side

We have spent a lot of time over the past few days talking about my mum the campaigner and our mother the fundraiser, but for us, her family, she'll be remembered for many different things. To me, Una was a dedicated mother, who raised us on her own until she met with Felix. She's the woman who took us to Waterfoot every summer, who arranged picnics on the beach with banana sandwiches and Skips crisps and who spent hours playing card games with us when it was too rainy to play outdoors. I remember our late night Chineses after choir practice, our walks around Colin Glen Forest Park and our annual viewing of Little Women at Christmas time. She believed in the power of education and pushed us all through Grammar School, making us believe that nothing was impossible for us. My mum always bursting with pride over our achievements - no matter how small - and was our biggest champion and supporter over the years. My mum told rubbish jokes, had a huge heart, talked far too much, never sat still, never learned the art of relaxation and was like a dog with a bone when she got an idea in her head. She could be frustrating and as one politician said during her wake, she was a 'bit of a melter' when she set her sights on something. However that Doherty stubbornness and tenacity stood her in good stead, got her through the hard times and then directed her efforts when she wanted to help others who found themselves facing the same difficulties - be it cancer, single parenthood, or financial difficulty. We are missing her already and the hole she's left is enormous. But my mum has also set us quite the challenge and left us a fantastic legacy.... that makes things a little easier.... Love you Mummy.
